Cocktail Attire for Women: What the Dress Code Actually Means

Cocktail attire means a dress that stops somewhere between the knee and the ankle, in a fabric with a bit of shine or texture, worn with heels. It is dressier than what you would wear to dinner and less formal than a floor-length gown. If the invitation says cocktail and you turn up in a lined midi dress in a solid colour, you have read the room correctly.

Where cocktail sits against the other dress codes

The four codes people actually get invited to sit on a ladder, and cocktail is the second rung from the top.

• Black tie — floor-length. A gown, or a very formal maxi. No ambiguity, no knee-length compromise.
• Black tie optional — floor-length is expected but a long, formal midi in a rich fabric will pass. If in doubt, go long.
• Cocktail — knee to mid-calf. Midi is the centre of the range. A polished mini works if the cut is structured rather than casual, and a maxi works if it is sleek rather than flowing.
• Semi-formal — one notch down. Same lengths as cocktail, quieter fabrics, less shine. A cocktail dress will always work at a semi-formal event. A semi-formal dress can look underdressed at a cocktail one.

The practical takeaway: cocktail and semi-formal overlap enough that one good dress covers both, as long as you buy at the cocktail end. Buying down does not work in the other direction.

Midi is the answer to the length question

If you want one rule, it is this: buy a midi. It reads correctly at every cocktail event, it suits the widest range of venues, and it is the only length nobody will ever look at twice.

The word "midi" gets used loosely, so here are real numbers from our own size charts rather than a vague description. Mini works at cocktail events when the dress is clearly constructed — embroidery, applique, a proper zip, a shape that holds itself. What the fabric will and will not do

Almost everything in this price bracket, ours included, is woven polyester. Ours is 100% polyester across the occasion dress range, and we would rather say so plainly than dress it up as something else. Polyester holds a shape well, photographs with a smooth finish under artificial light, does not crease in the back of a car, and costs a fraction of silk. It is not silk, it does not drape like silk, and it is warmer to wear in a crowded room.

Two consequences worth knowing before you order.

No stretch means the measurements are the measurements. Our occasion dresses are cut in a woven with no stretch. There is no give to absorb a half-size difference, so the size chart is not a guideline — it is the fit. If you are between sizes, size up. A dress that measures a 33.1 inch bust will not become a 34 inch bust because you want it to.

Lining decides whether you need anything underneath. This varies dress to dress and it is the single most common reason an otherwise good dress disappoints. Both cocktail midis above are fully lined, so nothing shows through and no slip is needed. The Sequin High Slit Maxi is partially lined through the body, so whether you want a slip depends on the colour you pick. Colour, and why it matters more at cocktail than anywhere else

Cocktail events are lit badly. Warm indoor light, flash photography, and a lot of dark suits behind you. Deep colours — black, wine, forest, navy — carry that lighting best and are the reason they have been the cocktail default for a century. Jewel tones photograph richer than pastels under artificial light. Metallics and sequins read as celebratory rather than formal, which is exactly right for a party and slightly loud for a work event.

The one genuine rule: not white, unless you are the person the event is for. Everything else is preference.

What to check before you order

• Your own measurements against the chart, not your usual size. Bust and waist first, hip if the chart lists it. No stretch means no forgiveness.
• Whether it is lined, partially lined, or unlined. If it is unlined, order a slip at the same time so it arrives together.

• Delivery timing against the event date. Order with enough margin to exchange a size if the first one is wrong.
